What is Cocaine?

Cocaine is a naturally occurring central nervous system (CNS) stimulant and local anesthetic alkaloid derived from the leaves of the Erythroxylum coca plant. Belonging to the tropane class, it acts primarily as a triple reuptake inhibitor (DRI/SNDRI), preventing the reabsorption of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain.

Effects

Cocaine produces short-lived but intense physical and mental stimulation, heightened alertness, confidence, talkativeness, and intense euphoria. Common physical side effects include increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, pupil dilation, appetite suppression, and teeth grinding. At higher doses or during redosing, it frequently induces anxiety, paranoia, physical restlessness, and strong compulsive craving to redose.

Important Warning: Frequent redosing rapidly increases cardiovascular strain, elevating the risk of heart arrhythmia, hypertension, and cardiac arrest. Combining cocaine with alcohol produces a potent metabolite in the liver called cocaethylene, which significantly increases toxicity and cardiovascular danger.
