Harm reduction is a pragmatic, health-centered framework based on the premise that psychoactive substances carry inherent risks. While complete abstinence is the only way to eliminate risk entirely, harm reduction strategies minimize hazards—such as overdose, bodily injury, and psychological trauma—while prioritizing individual safety, autonomy, and well-being.

Golden Rule of Harm Reduction

"You can always take more, but you can never take less." There is no such thing as completely "safe" substance use—only safe(r) use through education, preparation, reagent testing, and precise measurement.

1. Dosage & Precision Measurement

Accurate dosing is the single most critical safeguard against acute physical toxicity and panic experiences.

Non-Linear Dose Curves
Many compounds possess steep, non-linear dose-response curves. Doubling a dose from 20mg to 40mg does not simply double the intensity—it may amplify physiological and cognitive effects by 5x to 10x.
Never "Eyeball" Doses
Visual estimation is notoriously inaccurate. Powder density, static charge, and crystal structure vary wildly. A visually identical scoop could easily range from 10 mg to 60 mg.

Measurement Techniques

  • Milligram Scales (0.001g): Standard consumer scales ($20-$50) have high margins of error below 15 mg. Always use the included calibration weight, ensure a flat draft-free surface, and place a weight on the scale first before measuring low quantities.
  • Volumetric Liquid Dosing: Essential for highly potent compounds (doses < 10 mg). Dissolve a known mass of chemical (e.g., 100 mg) into a measured volume of liquid solvent (e.g., 100 mL distilled water or ethanol) to achieve a precise ratio (1 mg/1 mL), administered via oral syringe.
  • Allergy Testing: When opening a new batch, take a microscopic fraction (e.g., 1/10th of a threshold dose) and wait several hours to ensure you don't suffer severe allergic or hypersensitive reactions.

2. Chemical Verification & Reagents

Unregulated substances are frequently mislabeled, substituted, or contaminated with dangerous adulterants like synthetic fentanyl or high-potency research chemicals.

3. Routes of Administration (ROA)

Oral (Swallowing)
Slowest onset, allowing first-pass liver metabolism. Provides the safest physiological buffer against acute shock or rapid overdose.
Insufflation (Snorting)
Faster onset; damages nasal mucous membranes. Never share equipment (straws/notes) to prevent Hepatitis C transmission.
Injection (IV / IM)
Highest risk of lethal overdose, systemic infections, and rapid dependence. Always use sterile equipment and wheel filters.

4. Overdose Response & The Recovery Position

When an intoxicated individual is unconscious, respiratory depression or emesis (vomiting) can lead to asphyxiation. Placing them in the Recovery Position keeps the airway clear.

Kneel beside the person. Lay their nearest arm at a right angle (90°) to their body, elbow bent, palm facing upward.

Bring their other arm across their chest and hold the back of that hand flat against the cheek closest to you.

Bend Leg & Roll
Bend their far knee at a right angle. Pull up on the bent leg to gently roll them onto their side facing you.

Open Airway & Call Emergency Services
Tilt the head back slightly to ensure the mouth faces downward so fluids can drain. Call 911 / Emergency services immediately. Stay with them until help arrives.

5. Polysubstance Interaction Risks

Lethal Synergies

Combining multiple depressants (e.g., Alcohol + Benzodiazepines + Opioids) creates exponential respiratory depression, leading to fatal arrest. Never combine depressants or MAOIs with serotonergic drugs.

Set (Internal Mindset)
Refers to your emotional state, thoughts, expectation, and underlying psychological health. Avoid psychedelics during acute life stress, unmanaged distress, or active psychological crisis.
Setting (Environment)
The immediate physical and social surroundings. Select a safe, calm, controlled space free from unwanted visitors, physical hazards (heights, bodies of water), or high-stress environments.
