What is Adderall XR?
Adderall XR is the extended-release formulation of mixed amphetamine salts (dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine). Unlike the Immediate Release (IR) version, Adderall XR uses a dual-bead drug delivery system designed to release half of the medication immediately and the remaining half approximately four hours later, providing a sustained therapeutic effect throughout the day.
Effects
The effects are identical in nature to Immediate Release Adderall—increased mental focus, physical and cognitive stimulation, mood elevation, and heightened motivation. However, the intensity curve is smoother and spread over a much longer period. Common side effects include prolonged appetite suppression, insomnia if taken late in the day, dry mouth, increased heart rate, and post-use fatigue or irritability as the medication wears off.
